This scion of a wealthy Argentine family was an outstanding yachtsman, excelling in tennis, rugby, rowing and yachting. He cut his motor racing teeth on such diverse machinery as a 2.3-liter supercharged Alfa Romeo and Mercedes SSK and was invited to join Fangio and Gonzalez on a short trip to Europe during which he drove a Ferrari to fourth place in the 1950 Geneva Grand Prix. In 1953 he was invited to join the Gordini team in place of the injured Jean Behra, finishing fourth in the non-title Albi Formula 1 race and then ordering his own Maserati 150F for the following season. His best career placings were fourth in the 1954 Swiss and Spanish Grands Prix and in the 1955 Dutch Grand Prix. After a foray into sports car racing in 1957-58 he eventually retired to pursue his yachting interests with success that took him to Olympic level.
