Mauricio Gugelmin

Name: Mauricio Gugelmin

Nationality: Brazil

Date of birth: April 20, 1963 - Joinville

An old friend of Ayrton Senna who raced karts with the future World Champion when they were together in Brazil, Gugelmin graduated to car racing in 1981 and quickly dominated the British Formula Ford scene on his arrival in the UK. He progressed to win the 1985 British Formula 3 Championship which Senna had clinched two years earlier and then moved into Formula 3000 where he spent the next couple of years. In 1988 he was recruited by the March Formula 1 team and stayed with the marque through its transformation to Leyton House, posting an excellent third place at Rio in 1989 which marked the high water mark of his Grand Prix career. Remained with Leyton House to the end of 1991 and then, after a disappointing 1992 season with the makeshift Jordan-Yamaha, headed for the US Champcar scene where he has raced ever since.
